چکیده

Instabilities in snow slopes generally involve the progressive fracture along a weak snowpack layer. Recent field observations on fractures in weak layers have shown that this process results vertical displacement due to crushing of the weak layer. Long beam specimens containing a natural weak layer were used to study the propagation of fracture. Multiple black markers were inserted in the snow above and below the weak layer. The deformation of the slab during fracture propagation was recorded with a portable digital high speed camera. A technique to reconstruct the trajectories of the markers was developed. This resulted in a detailed visualization of the deformation of the slab during fracture propagation. Results show the propagation of a wave through the slab associated with the collapse of the weak layer. Propagation velocities were relatively constant in the middle of the beam and increased towards the edges. The propagation speed in the middle of the beam was 20 ms, in agreement with theoretical predictions of a new theory for fracture propagation in weak snowpack layers.

Comparing Fracture Propagation Tests and Relating Test Results to Snowpack Characteristics

The Propagation Saw Test (PST) and the Extended Column Test (ECT) are two recently and independently developed field tests that indicate the propensity for a slab and weak layer combination to propagate a fracture. University of Calgary researchers performed the PST and ECT throughout the 2008 winter season along with other standard stability tests to establish their strengths and limitations. ...

Anticracks: a New Theory of Fracture Initiation and Fracture Propagation in Snow

Shear failure models have traditionally dominated the research on slab avalanche initiation in snow science, but evidence has accumulated that they tell us only part of the story. In these models weak snowpack layers are regarded as compounds of zero thickness, but in reality they often consist of ice grain aggregates of finite thickness and high porosity. When such granular aggregates fail, th...

Estimating the effective elastic modulus and specific fracture energy of snowpack layers from field experiments

Measurements of the mechanical properties of snow are essential for improving our understanding and the prediction of snow failure and hence avalanche release. We performed fracture mechanical experiments in which a crack was initiated by a saw in a weak snow layer underlying cohesive snow slab layers. Using particle tracking velocimetry (PTV), the displacement field of the slab was determined ...

Validation of the Propagation Saw Test near Whumpfs and Avalanches

The Propagation Saw Test (PST) is a recently developed field test method for evaluating the fracture propagation propensity of slab and weak layer combinations. The PST is intended to replicate the fracture propagation behaviour found on nearby slopes. By following a simple interpretation guideline, PST results can indicate the propensity of a given snowpack to propagate weak layer fractures to...

Size scaling for dry snow slab release

[1] Sandpile avalanches were used first to illustrate the concept of self-organized criticality (SOC). Snow avalanches consist of two types: (1) loose snow avalanches which release in cohesionless material at the top of the snowpack and (2) slab avalanches which release by propagation of shear fractures originating in a thin weak layer at depth in the snowpack. Loose snow avalanches are analogo...
